Trump taps America First Policy Institute CEO to be agriculture secretary
**WASHINGTON** — President-elect Donald Trump has selected Brooke Rollins, the president and CEO of the America First Policy Institute, to serve as Secretary of Agriculture.
In a statement, Trump said, "As our next Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke will lead the charge to protect American farmers, who are truly the backbone of our country."
If confirmed by the Senate, Rollins would oversee the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which employs over 100,000 people and operates in every county across the nation. The agency’s responsibilities include managing farm and nutrition programs, forestry, food safety, rural development, agricultural research, trade, and more. The department's 2024 budget stands at $437.2 billion.
Her agenda, if approved, could have significant implications for both rural and urban America, influencing everything from national diets to household budgets. The Department of Agriculture plays a critical role in negotiating trade agreements, setting dietary guidelines, inspecting meat, addressing wildfires, and supporting rural broadband.
"Brooke’s dedication to supporting American farmers, defending food self-sufficiency, and revitalizing small towns dependent on agriculture is unmatched," Trump said.
Rollins heads the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank that has worked closely with Trump’s campaign to shape policy for his upcoming administration. She previously chaired the Domestic Policy Council during Trump's first term.
As Secretary of Agriculture, Rollins would advise the administration on the potential implementation of clean fuel tax credits for biofuels, particularly as the sector seeks to expand through sustainable aviation fuel production.
She would also play a role in renegotiating the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal, particularly in light of disputes over Mexico’s attempt to block imports of genetically modified corn and Canada’s dairy import quotas.
Trump has also indicated plans to reimpose significant tariffs, which could affect the agricultural sector.
Previously, Trump had considered offering the position to former U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler, a close ally and co-chair of his inaugural committee, according to CNN.
